Tips on the Care and Preservation of Antique Furniture
Before trying to move a piece of furniture:
Inspect the piece to make sure the piece is secure.
Do not lift from the top or by drawer handles.
Always tilt marble or glass vertically to move.
Remove drawers and/or shelves before moving.
Lift, do not drag the piece as you run the risk of weakening or damaging legs by dragging.
Wear cotton gloves- the oil from your hands can damage the surface of the furniture.
Remove jewelry to prevent scratching the surfaces.
Placement of furniture
Place furniture out of direct sunlight and away from strong artificial light.
In addition to the risk of fading, light can damage wax finishes, cause crazing and can dry out the surface.
If furniture is placed under a window, think about UV window film and shades.
Wood breathes- it expands and contracts with changes in humidity and temperature. Temperature and humidity should be constant- avoid proximity to windows or exterior doors.
When placing a decorative art on a surface, consider placing a cloth or felt pad between the object and the surface- it will prevent scratching.
Cleaning furniture
When dusting, user a soft, microfiber cloth.
Avoid commercial aerosol polish; use paste wax once every three months.
If you are going to clean hardware (handles, etc) remove them prior to cleaning- simply buff to clean, and wax with the same paste wax used on the furniture.
Storage
Never wrap furniture in bubble wrap- wrap the piece in sheets or blankets.
If possible, place the piece on blocks to avoid possible moisture damage from resting on the ground.
Do not stack furniture if at all possible- stacking can weaken joints.
